Our Clock Restoration Project
The clock is a two train armchair clock, made by James Conliffe of Liverpool in 1846. This features a very unique pendulum which hangs to the right of the clock, moving the escapement through a connecting rod. The clock is responsible for operating the clock hands on the single clock dial and strike hammer in the belfry. A bespoke endless chain autowind system is present on the clock, likely to have been installed in the 1960's when these systems were prominent. There is one black and gold copper convex dial adorning the tower, approximately 4' in diameter.
The dial appears to be in a good structural condition, due to its copper base, meaning that there has been no build up of corrosion. Some of the paint and gold markings have started to fade, due to the number of years since the last restoration and weather conditions, this can be attended to in situ. The dial should be restored in situ using scaffold as safe working access. This will need to be broken down into a number of visits, to allow the paint to thoroughly dry and harden between layers.
Our clock is lovingly maintained by Mr W Gardner, a dedicated member of the Church team.
The project began in preparation during the pandemic, we sought advice and quotes and the chosen contractor was selected at a Church PCC Meeting in the autumn of 2023.
