This name of this service means “shadows” in Latin. One of the features of the service is the gradual extinguishing of candles until only a single candle, a symbol of Christ, remains. As it gets darker we are invited to reflect on the emotional and physical pain of Jesus as death approached. Towards the end of the service the Christ candle is hidden, and a loud noise is heard symbolising the earthquake at the time of the death and his resurrection. Finally the hidden candle is restored, symbolising good over evil and by a single light we depart.
