About Us

Athanasius was the twentieth bishop of Alexandria from 328 – 373. He was a Christian theologian and a defender against the Arians who did not believe Jesus was fully God and fully Human.

He spent his life defending the divinity of the Holy Spirit, the human soul of Christ, and Christ's divinity. At the Council of Nicæa (c. 325) he said, ”Jesus that I know as my Redeemer cannot be less than God.”

He wrote the Athanasius Creed affirming the Trinity, still used today in church services.

The Church in Kirkdale was founded in 1880 but was damaged in the Blitz of 1940.  After closing for repairs it re opened on Easter Sunday 1941. Sadly the building was bombed again a few weeks later in the May blitz and was totally destroyed. The foundation stone for the present church was laid in 1956.

Nowadays St Athanaisus aims to serve the local community. We have a large hall space available for groups to use and a relaxed area near the entrance served by a fully fitted kitchen.  Look out for events we host on our Facebook page and website.
