International Pipe and Tabor Festival - Grantham, 15 to 17 September 2023

Exponents of the pipe and tabor will converge on Grantham over the weekend of 15–17 September to celebrate this historic instrument. Taking place at Grantham House and St Wulfram’s Church, the International Pipe and Tabor Festival will feature a symposium, workshops, and public performances. The highlight of the weekend will be a public concert in St Wulfram’s Church on Saturday evening at 7:30pm.

Comprising a one-handed whistle and drum, the pipe and tabor is the “original one man band”. Popular throughout medieval and renaissance periods, the pipe and tabor only just survived into the twentieth century in England as music for morris dancing. The Taborers’ Society was founded in 2005 to promote performance, research, and understanding of the little-known instruments. The annual festival is an integral part of the society’s activities.

On Friday (15 September) morning, Gillian and Rob Guest will lead a guided tour of medieval iconography featuring pipe and tabors, visiting churches at Ancaster, Brant Broughton and Heckington. Later in the afternoon, there will be a symposium in Grantham House with papers inspired by Grantham’s Francis Trigge chained library.

After workshops for society members in the morning, on Saturday (16 September) afternoon the massed taborers will tour the town accompanied by historic dance group, Grantham Danserye, and the Lincoln & Micklebarrow Morris Men. Full details of the programme are available online: http://www.pipeandtabor.org/festival/festival-programme/

On Saturday evening, members of the society will give a public concert in St Wulfram’s Church, starting at 7:30pm. Entitled “Celebrating Pipe and Tabor”, the concert will feature special guest Gaby Bultmann from Berlin. Admission is just £5.00, payable on the door. A licensed bar will be available.

The weekend concludes on Sunday morning with further workshops for society members.

St Wulfram

It's good to welcome you to St Wulfram's.

St Wulfram's is an ancient site of prayer and pilgrimage with a living heritage today.

Here are a few things which might be helpful for you to know about us: We're a diverse congregation of all ages and from all backgrounds. As Jesus welcomed all people, so we too welcome all people regardless of their background. We're a place where all your senses will be fully engaged in the worship of God. You may smell incense, hear beautiful music, experience silence and stillness and see people using gestures as a way to express the inexpressible during our services. We’re a place exploring how to serve our parish and neighbourhood with acts of compassion along with expressing justice locally and globally. We’re friendly, we will make every effort to welcome you, but we will try to respect your space. We hope to see you in St Wulfram’s very soon.
