FROM THE BISHOP OF DORKING
I wonder what you dreamt of being and doing as a child? I wanted to be a lighthouse keeper. Alas, the last lighthouse was automated the year I came of working age! It all changed, however, when I was confirmed at the age of 14 (thanks to my Dad, here this evening, who forfeited the only opportunity he had to run the London Marathon to be with me that day). That was the moment I became aware of a different light, and the beginning of a call to be different sort of lighthouse keeper.
Over the last 26 years, I have sought to play my part in reflecting the light of Christ, through the ordained ministry of God’s Church, in five different contexts. I began ministry as the junior priest at St David’s Cathedral, which was followed by being vicar of two villages in rural Pembrokeshire, and then vicar of a post-industrial town in more urban Carmarthenshire. Following this, I became an archdeacon in North Wales, before the very special six years I spent as Archdeacon of Surrey.
And now the Lord is calling me to serve as a bishop. I feel immensely blessed at the gift of a second calling to serve a diocese that I have grown to love deeply, but also quite terrified! And so I’m intending to apply the lessons I’ve learnt to date: that following Jesus Christ is the greatest adventure ever; that God never calls without equipping; and that he is always with me. I wonder how He might be calling you to a new adventure in reflecting His light in the months and years ahead?
Thank you for coming this evening. I value your support and prayers so much.

CHORAL EVENSONG
The Installation and welcome take place within the Cathedral’s regular service of Choral Evensong, from the Book of Common Prayer. Evensong is steeped in the Scriptures: the sung responses are short prayers taken from the psalms, and there are five other passages from the Bible. Two are read for us and three - the Psalmody, the Magnificat (Mary’s Song) and the Nunc Dimittis (Simeon’s Song) - are sung by the choir.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR FINANCIAL SUPPORT
Your support makes a real difference to the ministry and mission of Guildford Cathedral. Thanks to your gifts of time and money we’re proud to open our doors for free, 365 days a year, meeting the needs of both pilgrim and visitor. If you would like to support our work, if you are a member of one of our congregations and have not already done so, please consider joining our Planned Giving Scheme via the Parish Giving Scheme (PGS) and set up a regular donation by direct debit.
