Join us in the Cathedral for Barnabas the Apostle - Choral Evensong with Thanksgiving for Volunteers, on Sunday 11 June, at 6pm.
BARNABAS
Though not named among the twelve apostles of the evangelists, Barnabas emerges in the Acts of the Apostles as one of the most significant of their number. He sold his estate and gave the proceeds to the Church, since all things were to be held in common, and clearly became a leader. He is described as a Levite from Cyprus so, like his friend Paul, was from the Greek world rather than that of Palestine, and he introduced Paul to the leaders of the Church in Jerusalem. He was sent to Antioch apparently to guide the Christians there in their relations with non-Jewish converts, promoting the concept of all being one in Christ. He travelled with Paul until he and Paul had a major argument and Barnabas went own his own with Mark to Cyprus. He is known as the Son of Encouragement. Christian tradition is that he was martyred in Cyprus in the
year 61.
THANKSGIVING FOR VOLUNTEERS
Today we give thanks for the many volunteers without whom the life and ministry of the Cathedral would be depleted. Thank you to all of you who give your time, commitment and resources in so many varied ways, some of you for many years. Julie Mitchell, our Volunteer Co-ordinator, has created a display at the west end to showcase the myriad ways to volunteer here. This evening, we will be welcoming in particular those who have recently joined the Cathedral Guides team; however, all who have recently stepped forward as a volunteer are also welcome. We really couldn’t do what we do without you.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR FINANCIAL SUPPORT
Your support makes a real difference to the ministry and mission of Guildford Cathedral. Thanks to your gifts of time and money we’re proud to open our doors for free, 365 days a year, meeting the needs of both pilgrim and visitor. If you would like to support our work, if you are a member of one of our congregations and have not already done so, please consider joining our Planned Giving Scheme via the Parish Giving Scheme (PGS) and set up a regular donation by direct debit. This is very easy to do over the phone (03330 021 271), using our unique identifier, 170617001. Or via this link https://www.guildford-cathedral.org/support/congregational-giving . Alternatively one off donations can be made via https://www.guildford-cathedral.org/support
