Join us in the Cathedral for Via Crucis (A Devotion for Passiontide), Wednesday 5 April, 7pm
The Via Crucis is a devotion for Passiontide, composed in 2021 by Philip Moore, who from 1974 to 1983 was Organist and Master of the Choristers here. To his music he has added a selection of prayers written by Eric Milner-White, who was Dean of York from 1941 to 1963. Previously to that, in 1928 whilst Dean of King’s College, Cambridge, Milner-White introduced the familiar and well-loved Service of Nine Lessons and Carols.
The biddings are in tradition language in order to achieve coherence with the prayers, which were all written in the first half of the twentieth century.
This Devotion is offered in hope that the music and the prayers may provide a way for all to walk with Jesus in his last week, his ‘Way of the Cross’. The images which illustrate this evening’s music are taken from the current exhibition in the Cathedral of paintings by Ian McIllop, which form an interpretation of the Stations of the Cross (© Ian McKillop, used with permission).
