ALL SOULS
The believer's pilgrimage of faith is lived out with the mutual support of all the people of God. In Christ all the faithful, both living and departed, are bound together in a communion of prayer.
The texts set to music come from the old Latin rite in which there was a considerable emphasis on judgement after death. In recent years the liturgies of most parts of the Church have come to stress other aspects of death: resurrection, new life, and the vision of God. In this service the scripture readings and the prayers emphasise these points, whilst some of the musical texts remind us of our need for forgiveness, and that with God there is both mercy and judgement. The movement, In Paradisum, is sung after the dismissal as the concluding movement in this rite - originally it would have been sung as the coffin was carried out of church.
MASS SETTING
Messe de Requiem (Op. 9) Maurice Duruflé (1902-1986)
The ‘Pie Iesu’ movement is sung by Hannah Dienes-Williams.
