THE SEASON OF LENT
The season of Lent may originally have followed Epiphany, just as Jesus’ sojourn in the wilderness followed immediately on from his baptism. However, it soon became firmly attached to Easter, because Easter is the principal occasion for baptism and for the reconciliation of those who had been excluded from the Church’s fellowship for apostasy or serious faults. This connection explains the characteristic notes of Lent – self-examination, penitence, self-denial and study, to which almsgiving has traditionally been added.
PRECES AND RESPONSES Thomas Tomkins (1572-1656)
CANTICLES Second Service Orlando Gibbons (1583-1625)
OFFICIANT AND PREACHER
The officiant and preacher this evening is The Reverend Canon Duncan Myers.
