About Us
We at Holy Cross are a worshipping community that welcomes all and seeks to serve the people of Avening. We gather each Sunday, usually for Eucharist or Morning prayer at 10.00am
There are also other services on special occasions and also midweek house groups.
We welcome enquiries about Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals.
Christians have worshipped in this ancient Cotswold church since its consecration in 1080, and also in the Saxon church that previously stood on this site.
The Church of the Holy Cross is a beautiful and fascinating building with many Norman features and a remarkable stone vaulted ceiling in the chancel, and is thought to be the only church in the country ever to be commissioned by a Queen of England.
The church is where the people of Avening have brought their children to be baptised and married and also to lay their dead to rest, for nearly a thousand years. It is a focus of village community life and stands open for parishioners and visitors alike, to glorify God through prayer and meditation.
In addition to our normal Sunday services our year includes: Carol Service; Crib Service; midnight and morning Christmas services; celebration of Baptism at Candlemas; Ash Wednesday and Good Friday services; Lent Groups; Holy Cross Day in September; an annual celebration of family life; Harvest; All Souls' Service and Remembrance Service.
