St Michael's Church, Duntisbourne Rous.
The church is notable for its beautiful setting, on the side of a hill overlooking the Dunt valley and the woods beyond. Its simplicity and perfect proportions give it a serenity and charm which attract visitors from all over the world. It is warmly praised by John Betjeman in his Gloucestershire guide, and included by Simon Jenkins in his 1000 Best English Churches.
Its Saxon origins can be seen in the herring-bone stonework of the east and north walls. The windows are 12th century, and the tower 15th century, with its saddleback tower added in 1587. The carved pulpit is Jacobean, and the pews and panelling date from the 18th century.
A distinguished feature is the medieval wall painting in the chancel and the crypt, dating from about 1200.
The stone cross in the churchyard is a scheduled Ancient Monument, and is thought to date from the 12th century.
The church has no Victorian “improvements” except the east window.
