On Saturday 9th November, Sophie and Naomi from St. Lawrence gave a candlelit concert of duets and solos in church. Lamps, pumpkins and squashes added to the atmosphere along with mulled cider, warmed and spiced apple juice and cake. The church looked lovely as the audience of just over thirty people from near and far enjoyed listening to mainly familiar tunes on a theme of Dances and Dreams drawn from the popular classical and folk traditions. The instruments used were violin, viola, piano, clarinet and harp creating a good variety of texture and sound. The final piece, a Cotswold folk tune called “The Nutting Girl”, encouraged audience participation in clapping along to its strong “Morris Dance” beat. The youngest member of the audience was invited to come out to join the musicians and play the jingle stick, imitating the sound of Morris men’s bells. He did this brilliantly with great confidence. The evening was expertly compered by Roger Morris and huge thanks must also go to Sandra and Philip Gee for their support with refreshments and administration. Other members of the congregation also lent support with practical things like switching heating on and clearing up afterwards. As usual, it was a great team effort. Feedback from the audience was extremely positive and a good evening was had by all. Maybe we’ll do another one sometime in the spring or summer!
