St Nicholas Arrington has been working toward a more sustainable churchyard since 2014. In 2021 we joined the Diocese of Ely and Cambridgeshire Wild life Trust Award scheme. This was a real moral booster in terms of a focus for us and the community and were awarded the Bronze Award in 2022.
We developed not only a public display presentation but seasonal leaflets to remind people what joys can be found in the months even in winter. A moth and bug night 'count' found a locally microscopic mallow flea normally only associated with the Thames Estuary and another occasion a previously unknown butterfly enthusiast revealed that he had found a white Letter hairstreak butterfly which is a High Priority protected species.
The summer of last year of drought and excessive temperatures followed by torrential rain that caused localised flooding threatens to be a potential disaster for many plants and creatures that live off them so we will certainly be carefully monitoring species in 2023.
