It is so usual to walk in to a church and find either carpeted surfaces or tiled surfaces. So when we removed some pews at the back of the church in order to make the space more usable it was a surprise to find the remains of a lime mortar floor over bare earth. Although impressions of paments (small tile-like bricks) were seen they only covered a small part of the area. The rest of the area was simply the sort of floor one might find in any old agricultural building and must have been covered in rushes and straw. The paments, or their impressions, were only found leading to an area with a drain that must have been the original site of the font. There were not even any impressions of seating. The floor corresponded to similar remains observed some 20 years ago on the site of the former south Aisle that appears to have been demolished around 1685. The exposed floor will probably only be open for a short time as we expect to cover it up again very shortly.
