The Jarrow Lecture 2023 in St. Paul's Church - "Bede's Island" - Professor Catherine E. Karkov, FEA.

Occuring
Friday 26 May 2023 Friday at for 1 hour
Venue
St Paul's Church, Jarrow
Address
St Paul's Church, Jarrow, Church Bank Jarrow Gateshead/Newcastle, NE32 3DZ, United Kingdom

“This talk explores Bede as a proto-island writer. It focuses on his observations of the interrelationship between land and water and his use of that interrelationship in the Ecclesiastical History as a means of both describing both the island and the processes of migration and colonisation. The relationship between and the interlocking movement of land and water, the ebb and flow of the tides, can be understood as part of not just the content but also the structure of the Ecclesiastical History, a text that establishes some of the foundations for modern colonial writing.” - Professor Catherine E. Karkov, FEA

Admission to the Lecture is Free.
There will be refreshments available afterwards.
