“This talk explores Bede as a proto-island writer. It focuses on his observations of the interrelationship between land and water and his use of that interrelationship in the Ecclesiastical History as a means of both describing both the island and the processes of migration and colonisation. The relationship between and the interlocking movement of land and water, the ebb and flow of the tides, can be understood as part of not just the content but also the structure of the Ecclesiastical History, a text that establishes some of the foundations for modern colonial writing.” - Professor Catherine E. Karkov, FEA
