About Us
St John’s, Egglescliffe stands within the centre ground of the Anglican tradition. We hope to offer a home to those who may have differing understandings of how to be church and to worship, but who are committed to discipleship. We also hope to be a congregation which will accept whatever anyone wishes to give by way of sharing of gifts and talents; and to be a place where the explorer will find help on his or her journey.
The church building is mediaeval with a fine seventeenth century interior, which has undergone a transformation to make better use of the space for welcome, prayer, and hospitality. A small extension provides an equal access toilet, a baby-change area, and better facilities for utility and storage. There is a sound enhancement and loop system.
During the Covid pandemic our church has been closed for Sunday worship. We are delighted that we can now offer Sunday worship at 10am. There is no need to book a place but we do ask that you wear a face covering, sanitise your hands, observe social distancing and follow our one way system. Our churchwardens and the team are always available to help and make you welcome.
From October 2021 we will re introduce our 8am worship on Sunday morning which will be followed by All Age worship at 10am
with more contemporary worship led by guitar & keyboard, we especially welcome families for baptism at this service and our worship is enhanced by our 'Bright Lights' puppet team.
Baptism ministry: We welcome people through baptism at noon on the first Sunday of most months. Newly baptised people attend our All Age service for the anointing with oil the month following their baptism. This is a great opportunity for them to take their place within the family of God at st John's.
SPARKS! is our ministry to children up to the age of eleven years old. From September 2021 SPARKS! will take place via zoom. Children and their grown ups will enjoy fun activities that are sent prior to the event. We sing songs, share stories and have a lot of fun. Please contact Vanessa for the zoom link.
Wednesday at 9.30am is set aside for morning prayer or informal Holy Communion which lasts about half an hour. Also on Wednesday 10.30 till 11.45 we have our Community Coffee Morning where we welcome all comers to our church. During term time, on Tuesdays 9am the church is alive with prams and children at our ‘PIPS’ (Prayer, Inspiration, Play, Song) service for the under 5s. A very short service time – prayers and candles, a story and some songs – is followed by play and refreshments! This service complements our Parent and Toddler group (OOPS – One o’ clock play at St John’s) which meets on Wednesdays from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Parish Hall in Butts Lane. Additional mid-week services are usually held during Lent and other significant dates.
Our Friendship Lunch for retired people in the Parish Hall is increasingly popular, This is a simple two course meal costs £3.50. We would love to see you there. to book contact Vanessa on 07375 077699
