On Friday, June 14th from 6 - 8 p.m, St. Cuthbert’s welcomed children from Butterknowle Beavers, Cubs and Scouts who worked with church members to set up a Wild Area within the churchyard. The children roped off a section of the churchyard (where there are no graves) which will be left unmown until late September to encourage wild flowers. They put up bee, butterfly and ladybird boxes, and collected leaves and twigs to complete a large bug hotel adjacent to the wild area. They also did a BioBlitz of plants, found a large mushroom, and discovered a young bird that couldn’t yet fly. A litter pick yielded everything from a Foster’s lager glass to a metal spike and some old carpet! All that hard work was rewarded with drinks and biscuits in the sunshine. The children will be visiting again in September and November to look for seasonal changes and carry out other eco-tasks to earn their Conservation badges.
