I am pleased to update everybody that our building contractors have been on site at All Saints Church since November 2023, and they are making steady progress in the rebuilding of the walls and roof. Locally sourced stone has been delivered to the site and is being cut to size by skilled workmen. The path from Lower Road down to the church has been resurfaced making it easier for ramblers and parishioners wishing to access the graveyard. Meanwhile, we are working to a timeline of 4 June 2024 to feedback our plans for the design and reordering of the interior of the church to the Derby Diocese for their consideration. This includes the design and choice of stained-glass windows and furniture and a stained glass artist and carpenter have been commissioned to help us with this work. Good progress is being made and the Parochial Church Council is working at a pace with our architects to meet the 4 June timeline. We will be consulting further on these designs with the statutory bodies (including Historic England) as well as our congregation and local residents in the next few weeks. So everybody who has an interest will all have the opportunity to have a further say on the final drawings before they are submitted to the Diocese. A storyboard is also being set up on the site for all passers by and visitors to read at their leisure. This will be complete in the next few weeks. Don McLure ROMP Project Lead 14th March 2024
Next phase of Mackworth church restoration begins All Saints’ Church in Mackworth has started on the next phase of rebuilding, after the Chancellor of the Diocese of Derby gave permission for the work to go ahead. The centuries-old church, just outside Derby, was severely damaged by fire following an arson attack in December 2020 and has not been able to be used since. The Parochial Church Council (PCC) was granted permission to rebuild the church by the Chancellor of the Diocese of Derby in September and a contractor has been procured to start the work which is expected to take around 30 months to complete and includes rebuilding the walls and roof. Consultation has also started on the next phase of the rebuild and Mackworth Parish residents will be consulted over the coming months about what the interior restoration should include. After receiving permission for the work to go ahead, Don McLure, the Project Lead and PCC Treasurer, said: “It is great news for the congregation, local residents and the PCC that we can move forward with restoring the church. It is a long and complicated process, but the PCC is aiming to make the exterior of the church look as near as possible to how it was before the fire. The church had existed on the site at Lower Road for more than 700 years. “We are extremely grateful to Ecclesiastical Insurance, who will fund both the building and interior work, and to the local community and supporters of the church for raising more than £40,000 towards any non-insurance works that may be carried out.” The fire completely destroyed the interior, including the pipe organ and marble pulpit, and caused the entire roof to fall in and structural damage to the walls of the nave and chancel. It is estimated that the entire rebuilding project could cost up to £13m. The congregation of All Saints has continued enjoying Christian worship thanks to the hospitality of its sister church, St Michael's, Kirk Langley.
Our building contractor, Croft Building and Conservation Ltd will be starting on site on Monday 30 October. The estimated time to rebuild the walls and roof is 30 months. The PCC and our professional project team have started work on the interior design of the church. The congregation will be consulted for their ideas soon.Don McLure - ROMP Project Lead
