Getting here

St Edmund’s loves having visitors (we are also dog friendly!) Being in a tourist area we are able to welcome people from all over the world , and we are happy to have our church open from approximately 10.00am to dusk seven days a week. Our church probably started life as a garrison chapel for the Norman soldiers from Peveril Castle which gazes out over the village, although some Anglo-Saxon artefacts suggest there was something here even earlier. They left a magnificent Norman chancel arch. Our beautiful blue ceiling looks down on fascinating box pews with names and 17th and 18th century dates carved on their dark oak doors. We have some stained glass, including a Kempe window in the chancel – see if you can find our sole fragment of mediaeval glass in the shape of a small angel. This has recently been authenticated and will be added to CMVA ( Corpus Vitrearum Medii Aevi) and is the first medieval glass discovered in Derbyshire since the early 1990s. WE also recently discovered a fragment of wall painting which we hope to explore further when funds allow.

Our bells are a ring  of eight designed in a novel shape by James Harrison of Barton-on-Humber, brother of the more famous Henry of chronometer and longitude fame. Information boards and a comprehensive guide book will tell you more, but maybe the best part of your visit will be a peaceful ten minutes in a pew, allowing the peace and tranquility to refresh your soul.

We are part of the  United Benefice of Hope, Bradwell and Castleton,  three churches are served by our Vicar Revnd Ian Davis, helped by Revnd  Josephine Barnes . As well as working to bring our own churches together, when the occasion arises we are also keen to develop our ecumenical ties with other denominations, particularly the Methodists in our own Benefice.

At present we are a typical moderate, inclusive village church, with a small congregation enjoying our traditional Common Worship and Book of Common Prayer services. However  we are now working on our Mission Action Plan (MAP), a process of assessing our present position and working out  and implementing a rolling programme which will make it possible to reach out to our community and also to visitors so that we can welcome all who seek to enrich their lives through the ministry of Christ.

We are enthusiastically seeking to build on our special services and activities. With this in view we are looking for other ways to adapt our activities to suit todays lifestyle, so that we appeal to everyone throughout the community, both young and old. Already we have several special services which attract a larger congregation.We now support  Messy Church which is going well so far and is a joint effort between the Methodists and ourselves. We meet at Hope Sports Pavilion on the fourth Sunday of the month 3.30-5.00pm, where we enjoy crafts, activities, prayer and refreshments in a relaxed atmosphere, organised by Dave Halford our

During our Tuesday morning Eucharist we particularly pray together for those who have used our prayer request table during the week, many of them visitors. We can also add you to our prayer list if you are elsewhere - email us.

We hold a beautiful Christmas Tree Festival during the last two weeks of November and the first two weeks of December opendaily 12md-5pm, Saturday 6.00pm

If you are in our neighbourhood why not join us for a service – we have refreshments afterwards – come and meet the “locals”, we will make you (and your well behaved dog on a lead) most welcome.
