Tenebrae is Latin for shadows and the service recreates the emotional aspects of the passion story. The church is candlelit with a candle for each reading - after each reading from John's gospel a candle is extinguished until only the Christ candle is left alight. The final reading is Psalm 22 that Jesus quoted on the cross. At the end of this reading the Christ candle too is extinguished leaving the church in darkness - the congregation then leave in silence.
