Come along to Waberthwaite Village Hall on Saturday November 9th to learn about how to care for and restore an old building, whether it be a house, a church or a barn! Dr Ian Panter is an expert who has worked on prestigious projects such as the Mary Rose recovery and restoration. He'll be in Waberthwaite to talk share his expertise, to talk about work the Trust are doing on our ancient cross piece and to answer any questions you might have, The event starts at 2.00 and after his talk and questions and refreshments, there will be local people happy to talk to you about what they have found out in the last 12 months about village and church history. This will include information on the Heritage Project. Tickets for Dr Panter's talk are £5 available on the door or locally. The Hall is just off the A595 4 miles north of Bootle and south of Muncaster Castle. Postcode LA19 5YJ.
At the moment we are in the middle of applying for grants to undertake a big project centred around St John's Church at Hall Waberthwaite. Our plans fall into five main categories:urgent repair work and restoration of the church buildingbetter interpretation of the church and the siteprovision of study facilities for visiting groups including schools in the Old Laundry buildingresearch into the history of the site and its importancemaking sure the ecology of the site is understood and preserved We have a keen and active group of community and church members developing our ideas and one of our aims is to involve as many people as possible over the span of the project. At the moment our main task is to obtain grant funding - almost a full-time job!Look out for updates over the next few months
A busy night in the Brown Cow playing darts, dominoes and Connect 4 helped us raise over £400. Our thanks to all the organisers and players. The open day brought visitors who had not been before and seemed appreciative of the church and our plans. They have joined our mailing list so we can keep them up to date with progress.Until we get a large grant we are focusing on sorting out the major damp problems in the church. We are starting investigative work on the outside of the church - checking drainage away from the building and moving on to removal of the cement render. We are hoping for some grant money to support this. We have a grant from the Veneziana Fund to conserve the Anglian cross fragment. York Archaeological Trust will be involved in that work over the next couple of months. The fundraising we are doing now will go towards these projects. If you would like to be kept informed of our progress, and haven’t already given us your details, please contact us via e mail or by ringing Liz Clegg (secretary )on 01229717661. Your details will only be used by us for sharing what’s happening. You can find other updates in the benefice magazine and by following our Facebook page.
