Isaiah 30.5
‘In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength’
Daily Reflection
These words were originally addressed by Isaiah to the Israelites, who were sandwiched between two antagonists, Egypt and Assyria. In an attempt to find safety they kept forming alliances with first one power and then the other, according to which looked more likely to be victorious. Predictably, this did not bring about the desired peace.
Isaiah’s words are about faith. Stop stressing and dithering, he says. Put your trust in the God who has always protected you and provided for you.
We all have a tendency to rush about in a frenzied search for solutions to our problems. Isaiah is not suggesting that we should sit around passively and do nothing, but that by spending quiet time with God and trusting in him we shall find both the confidence and the strength to do what is needed.
