Daily Scripture
‘And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself’ (John 12.32)
Daily Reflection
In this part of John’s Gospel, Jesus’s speaks of his forthcoming death, when he will be ‘lifted up’ on the cross.
Preaching on these words in Pasadena in 2005 the incomparable Archbishop Desmond Tutu said the following:
‘When Jesus said these words, did he say “I will draw some - and tough luck for the others”? No. He said “When I am lifted up, I will draw all.” All! All! All! - Black, white, yellow; rich, poor; clever, not so clever; beautiful, not so beautiful. All! All! It is radical. Saddam Hussein, Osama bin Laden ... Gay, lesbian, so-called “straight”. All! All! All are to be held in the incredible embrace of the love that won’t let us go’.
And that includes us.
