St Martin's

A Church has stood on the hillside at the top of Horn Street for over 1000 years. The churchyard contains the grave of Samuel Plimsoll, a Liberal MP for Derby, who is world renowned for creating the 'Plimsoll Line' on ships and saved the lives of many seamen, and earned him the nickname 'The Sailor's Friend'. St Nicholas

HISTORY OF ST NICHOLAS

The earliest reference to a church at Newington can be found in the Domesday Book of 1086 with the list of priests just inside the church door going back as far as 1220. The Nave, Chancel and Belfry were built before the medieval period, and there are distinct signs of Saxon architecture. The North Aisle was added in the early 14th century and the Chapel was built in the late 14th century. In 1771 the parishes of Newington and Cheriton were first united for many decades and in early 21st century the parishes have again united forming a combined 'Benefice'.
