Less words please…Sometimes I fear that the many ‘words’ we us in our worship services, sermons and prayers get in the way of our relationship with God. Now don’t get me wrong - we need words and when not silent we need good words as opposed to less good words. We don’t for example describe God as fickle, we do by contrast describe him as Faithful - the right words matter. But we do have so many words sometimes, and just sometimes these words can capture rather than release souls. We speak of Jesus as the ‘Word made flesh’ yet sometimes are in danger of turning a living breathing alive personal God, into words on a page. We can in effect easily turn the word made flesh into word again.Perhaps the biggest disjuncture that arises from our dependence and overuse of words comes in our life of prayer, our talking and listening to God. Sometimes the way we speak to God doesn’t seem to match earthy reality or indeed the way God speaks to us. Here we may draw on the wisdom of the poets and today in particular Kelly Belmonte’s poem ‘How I talk to God.’See what you think…Coffee in one hand
leaning in to share, listen:
How I talk to God.
How I talk to God.Above the highway
hawk: high, alone, free, focused.
How God talks to me.Rash, impetuous
chatter, followed by silence:
How I talk to God.First, second, third, fourth
chance to hear, then another:
How God talks to me.Fetal position
under flannel sheets, weeping
How I talk to God.Moonlight on pillow
tending to my open wounds
How God talks to me.Pulling from my heap
of words, the ones that mean yes:
How I talk to God.Infinite connects
with finite, without words:
How God talks to me.Which is probably enough words for now…Peace and BlessingsAndy THIS WEEK AT ST CHRISTOPHERSSaturday 16th 1130-130pm - Saturday Kitchen brunch and Coffee Drop InSaturday 16th 2-4pm - Easter Season Worship workshop and ideas led by Tessa WilkinsonSunday 17th 1030am Creative ServiceMonday 18th 915am Time for Tots Toddler GroupTuesday 19th 8am Reflection (FB)Wednesday 20th 10am Mid Week Communion at St ChristophersWednesday 20th 12noon Over 55s Lunch ClubSunday 24th 945am Palm Sunday procession and worship - meet 930am at St Christophers or 1030am at St Cuthberts
