I wonder what the word 'Extravagance' feels like to you?Perhaps it has negative connotations possibly allied to wastefulness - after all we live in a world where so many are in great need - where many do not have enough. Surely therefore extravagance is wasteful - a luxury that we can neither afford or should entertain..?Or maybe extravagance has some positive connotations for you - sometimes it is a good thing that we 'push the boat out' and mark a special day or occasion. There are major things in life that warrant extravagance and celebration - 50 years of marriage, getting that dream job, passing that degree, a notable family occasion or the passing of a driving text or exam. It would seem somewhat churlish and a little bit odd to be invited to a wedding and then get served up beans on toast as the centrepiece of the catering...This weekend's bible passage (not the one above which I just used as a curious example of Jesus' own wastefulness (or prodigality)) explores an extravagant act done to Jesus.
