The surrender was met with relief and celebration that after six long years the Second World War was finally over. While millions took part in parades and street parties, there was also great sadness - the human cost was enormous and many eagerly awaited the safe return of loved ones. Over 90,000 British troops were casualties in the war against Japan - 30,000 died and 37,500 were held as prisoners of war. For hundreds of thousands of service personnel from Britain and the Commonwealth, it would take many months to be reunited with loved ones, some of whom they hadn’t seen for more than five years. To commemorate the anniversary of the end of the Second World War our Church bell will toll at 11.58 am, on Friday 15th followed by 2 minutes of silence and then some prayers will be offered for peace and healing in our world. On Saturday 23rd August at 10.00 am there will be a short service at the cenotaph in the Memorial Park at which the Vicar will preside. God of the nations, our refuge and our dwelling place, we remember with thanksgiving those whose service achieved Allied victory in the Pacific and hold before you all those who suffered from the devastation and trauma of war. As we pray for those who suffer the atrocities of war, strengthen our resolve to pursue what makes for peace, through the one in whom we are reconciled and made one, even Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 100 Club winners: Samantha Palinczuk, Karen Hay, Kath Greatorex, Muriel Freestone, Ruth Aspinall, Bernice Meekins, Shirley Kershaw, Julie Lyon, Christopher Jones, Judith Crosby, Carole Pilling and David Devereux. Thank you for supporting the ongoing ministry of the Church through this initiative. Do speak to the Vicar if you want to add to the list. It is a profound moment recorded in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, and echoed in the Second Epistle of Peter. Jesus takes Peter, James, and John up a mountain to pray, and there, He is transfigured—His face shines like the sun, and His clothes become dazzling white. Moses and Elijah appear beside Him, representing the Law and the Prophets and a voice from the cloud declares Jesus as God's beloved Son. The Transfiguration reveals to us Jesus' divine nature and serves as a powerful sign of hope and glory. It stands as one of the five great milestones in His earthly ministry—alongside His baptism, crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension. On the mountaintop, heaven touches earth and Jesus stands as the bridge between the divine and the human. Let this moment remind us to seek God’s presence in our own “mountaintop moments” — those times set apart for prayer, reflection, and encountering Him more deeply. In the stillness, when we intentionally ‘draw near’ to God, we open our hearts to hear His voice more clearly — a voice that calls us beloved, a voice that leads us in truth. And let us always be ready to be transformed by the glory of Christ. Just as the disciples witnessed His radiance and were forever changed, so too are we invited to be renewed — in our minds, our hearts and our walk with Him. His light reveals, restores, and equips us to carry that same light into the world. May we live as people who have seen His glory — not only with our eyes, but with faith — and may that vision shape the way we speak, serve and love. The Bereavement Journey: Beginning on 2nd September, St Nic’s & St Peter’s have been invited to join Emmanuel Church which is running this short course for the second time. It is an award-winning series of films and discussion groups that gently guides people bereaved at any time through the most common aspects of grief and bereavement, enabling them to process the implications for themselves and discern next steps. It is suitable for people of any faith or none. It may be for you or you may wish to come along with someone you know who needs a bit of support. Please speak to the Vicar for more details. Please also remember in your prayers: David Jackson, Martyn Westby, Brian Brown, Pauline Brookes, Louise Gorley, Michael Carthy, Paul Sumner, Sandra Pratt, Chris Kelsall, Carole Pilling, Tracey Ashworth, Philip Wayman, Joanne Mallin, Harvey, Maureen Baines, Jan Risley. You left me speechless with the amazing Broadway Rooms joyful celebration of fellowship, incredible food and hospitality, not to mention the entertainment – now you all know the actions for ‘Our God is a great big God’ and ‘My Lighthouse’! Thank you so much to everyone who contributed in any way – Judith and the team, those who set everything up and tidied away afterwards, all who provided the vast array of sandwiches and cakes and made the tea and coffee and served everyone so graciously. And then, on Sunday, the wonderful presents, the flowers, the chocolates, the cards and the gifts, you overwhelmed me. A special word of thanks to Rev Carolyn for opening up this opportunity for me to serve at St Nic’s, I have received so much from God through you. I take the message of the cake, the forget-me-nots in icing - believe me I will not forget you, dear friends in Christ. Using the words of St Paul: “I will always thank God for all of you and will continually mention you in my prayers. I remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labour prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.” (based on 1 Thess. 1:2-3). Love, grace and peace in Christ, Vicky. Goodbye, Adios, Au revoir, Auf Wiedersehen, Arrivederci, 😢 It is with both sadness and deep gratitude that we bid farewell to Vicky today. Vicky has been on placement with us at St Nic’s since Advent Sunday, and in that time, she has truly become part of our church family. We are sincerely thankful to her sending church, St Thomas’s in Blackpool, for releasing her for this placement, and we are eternally grateful for the blessing of Vicky’s ministry among us. Many have remarked that it feels as though she has been with us forever—and that is because, from day one, Vicky rolled up her sleeves and wholeheartedly joined in with the life of our church community. She has walked alongside us with warmth, energy, and a genuine love for God’s people. We have been deeply enriched by her wisdom, her gift of teaching, and her gracious pastoral heart. Our confirmation candidates, in particular, will always remember the thoughtful guidance and encouragement she offered as she prepared them for this significant step in their own journeys of faith. As Vicky returns to continue her ministry at St Thomas’s and beyond, we send her with our heartfelt thanks, our prayers for God’s richest blessing, and our assurance that she will always have a home here at St Nic’s. Go well, Vicky—thank you for all you have shared with us, and may God continue to use you mightily in His service. Sea Sunday: Grateful thanks to all our wonderful hostesses who served a sumptuous selection of cakes after this annual gathering at St Nic’s. Thanks also to those who stayed behind to clear up. BIG WEEKEND – This afternoon and as part of Tram Sunday, St Peter’s and St David’s will be holding the final event of their mission weekend in the grounds of St Peter’s. If you’re around why not pop in and say hello. Please also remember in your prayers: David Jackson, Martyn Westby, Brian Brown, Pauline Brookes, Louise Gorley, Michael Carthy, Paul Sumner, Sandra Pratt, Chris Kelsall, Carole Pilling, Tracey Ashworth, Philip Wayman, Joanne Mallin, Harvey, Maureen Baines and Chris Cousins. We also remember Jean Mountford, Dorothy Sillis and Catherine Williams whose funerals are due to take place.
