We will continue our celebrations over a Jacob’s Join lunch in the Broadway Rooms on Easter Sunday. We would be sincerely grateful if you might consider donating any items of chocolate or Easter eggs to be used as prizes on the day. Lent Study 4: On Wednesday we were in the company of Esther. Finding herself as Queen of Persia, she was courageous enough to intervene to save her people. In so doing she was strengthened by the prayers of her community. We thought about the power and comfort of communal prayer and joined together in the ancient office of Compline, which derives its name from a Latin word meaning ‘completion’. It is above all a service of quietness and reflection before the end of the day and is particularly special when prayed communally. Reasons for Covering Statues: One of the primary reasons for covering the statues in church with purple shrouds is to encourage us to focus on spiritual reflection by removing any distractions. The act of covering statues serves as a visual reminder of the solemnity of this season. But it also serves to create a sense of anticipation for the joyous celebrations of Easter. By temporarily concealing the statues and crosses, we are underscoring the idea of waiting and preparing for the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Annual Parochial Church Meeting (APCM): A reminder that the APCM will take place in Church on Tuesday 13th May at 7 pm. Please save the date, especially if you are now registered on the electoral roll of St Nic’s. There are three vacancies coming up on the church council. They are both primary schools and the Vicar works hard to maintain a good relationship with them both. Our application to National Churches Trust has been successful and we have been awarded a further £30,000 towards the cost of our Tower repairs. This is truly an answer to prayer and affirmation that folk at National level agree that St Nic’s is worth investing in for the future. Work is due to start immediately after Easter.Lent Study 2: In our study on Wednesday and using Elijah as an example we were asked to consider what ambitious prayer looks like. Bishop Philip shared examples of prayers that Elijah had prayed and prayers Jesus had prayed. What we learned from these examples is that we are to ‘pray big, pray bold and pray with ambition.’ Too often our prayers are timid and tentative. We ask small or we often don’t ask at all. Maybe we struggle to believe in a God who might actually intervene and change things. ‘Our prayer is that God’s world and our world become one world. Jesus teaches his disciples to pray, ‘Thy kingdom come.’ There is no bigger or more ambitious prayer possible than that. It asks for that day when the kingdoms of this world shall become the Kingdom of our God and of his Christ. We long for that day, we yearn and pray for that day’. So, let’s be ambitious in our prayers for change. Pray for our church to grow. Pray that through its ministry, men and women and girls and boys might come to faith in Jesus Christ. Pray for the renewal and revitalisation of our church. Pray for a return to Christ across our nation. Let these prayers and many more come out of your mouth. Jesus says ‘Ask and it shall be given you.’ Session 3 will take place this Wednesday at 4.30 pm.Easter Lilies: On Easter Day it is our tradition to fill the church with Easter lilies. To help with the cost of these, you are invited to make a donation in memory of a loved one whose name will be added to a ‘remembrance roll’ and displayed in church. Please place you donation and loved one’s name in an envelope and deposit it in the box at the back of church.Church Keys: If you have any keys, either for church or the Broadway rooms please annotate the record card at the back of church. If you have keys belonging to the church that you no longer use, then please hand them back to the Vicar or one of the Churchwardens as soon as possible. Many thanks. Please also remember in your prayers: Martyn Westby, Brian Brown, Louise Gorley, Mark Price, Michael Carthy, Paul Sumner, Sandra Pratt, Michael, Chris Kelsall, Tracey Ashworth, Philip Wayman, Primrose, Chris Cousins, Rob and Baby Miles Butterworth. Thirty-eight of us met at 4.30 pm in the Broadway Hall. Using Hannah as an example we were asked to consider the health of our personal prayer life. Bishop Philip shared four different ways of praying, but above all he stressed that it is important to have a structure to our personal prayer, giving time simply and solely to the Lord; dedicated time, carved out for God, when all we do is pray. Quoting Matthew 6 ‘Whenever you pray go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you,’ Bishop Philip reminded us that what the Lord offers us is a personal relationship, a genuine friendship. And that is fed above all by deep, heartfelt and honest prayer – “just you and God and no one else.” So, if you are seeking to improve your prayer life and your relationship with God do come along this coming Wednesday at 4.30 pm for session 2. Everyone is welcome. If you are not able to attend, you may wish to watch Bishop Philip’s talk on the Diocesan YouTube channel instead.Easter Lilies: On Easter Day it is our tradition to fill the church with Easter lilies.
