We have seen the targeting of hotels, homes, and businesses believed to be owned or occupied by asylum seekers and refugees, including our own Metropole Hotel in Blackpool. An incredulous response to the pain of so many families in Southport! We’ve witnessed old and young threatening police, smashing windows, and setting streets alight, courtesy of this angry mob of destruction. All driven by fear and loathing of those who are perceived as ‘other’ – those the rioters believe do not belong. This resort to violence is so painfully wrong. What then does it look like for us as Christians to support the bereaved and fight for justice? Jesus, in his teachings in Mark 12:28–34, gives us a very clear commandment. In fact, it’s one of the two greatest commandments, which is ‘to love our neighbours as ourselves’. To love both the grieving families, friends of the young girls who died, and the marginalised who have consequentially got a target on their backs. Immigration concerns and policy aside, the people we live alongside are our neighbours. Of course, we should engage in dialogue about the legality of and legislation around asylum seeking. But, when we are faced with the person in front of us, what should our first and ultimate response be? Jesus says it is to love – to unconditionally commit to work for their welfare. We are called to respond with ‘love in action.’ Jesus said we should love our neighbours. How could you be loving yours? Lord God, at this time of unrest, we ask for your Spirit to bring unity to our communities. For those who feel anxious, scared or intimidated – we ask you to fill them with your peace. For those who feel unwanted, abandoned or alone – we pray that you would fill them with your love. For those who feel in despair – we ask you to bring your hope. We pray for those causing disorder on the streets, that they will turn from darkness and hate, to be responsible upstanding citizens of their country. Fill this land with your spirit of peace we pray. Please remember in your prayers: Jeff Chambers, Katie, Mark Price, Debbie, Michael Carthy, Rev Jane Everett, Paul Sumner, Sandra Pratt, Tom, Michael, John McLellan, June Larkin, Rob Williams and David Richardson. And we remember the family of Jacqui Bidle whose funeral is due to take place.

Our athletes from Great Britain are doing us proud! But as we watch people from every nation and tongue run fast, jump high, and throw far this summer, there are countless opportunities to experience again the joy that comes from doing or watching something God designed every sportsperson and fan to love. As we ourselves get out and walk, run, swim, or whatever we love to do and we experience that joy, we can share it with others. In the film Chariots of Fire, the 1924 Olympian Eric Liddell says: ‘I believe God made me for a purpose, but he also made me fast, and when I run, I feel his pleasure.’ For us, whatever our hobby, there is a striking witness when we acknowledge the gifts and passions we have are God-given and participate in them joyfully and with thanksgiving. Enjoy this week, whatever the outcome. Let’s count every blessing, and thank God for his created world. Church Cleaning: This coming Saturday we’re going to undertake a deep clean of the church. We’re so grateful to the church sitters who do a bit of dusting and sweeping during the week which has meant our monthly cleans have been far fewer. So, if you're able, come along with a duster and some polish and give us a hand. It’s good to do it together. 100 Club Winners: Congratulations to our July recipients: Freda Wayman, David Ashworth, Michael Newton, Mavis Evans, Dorothy Angel. Carole Pilling, Raymond Hollebone, David Meekins. Alison Horobin, Christopher Ashworth, Ruth Aspinall and Laura Martin. Thank you to all who support the ongoing ministry of St Nic’s in this way. Please remember in your prayers: Jeff Chambers, Katie, Mark Price, Debbie, Michael Carthy, Rev Jane Everett, Paul Sumner, Sandra Pratt, Tom, Michael, John McLellan, June Larkin, Rob Williams and David Richardson. Please also remember the families and friends of Gordon Patterson and Russell whose funerals are due to take place.

Please do attend this community service if you are able. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be served in the Broadway Rooms afterwards. Anne and Joachim: On Friday 26th July at morning prayer, we remembered and gave thanks to God for Anne and Joachim. They do not appear in the Bible, but appear for the first time in a document written around 150 AD known at the Gospel of James, one of Jesus’ first disciples. Tradition has it that Anne and Joachim were married for 20 years, but didn’t have any children. They prayed to God for a child and promised that if God granted their wish, they would dedicate this child to God. According to age old traditions, while Joachim was living with shepherds, an angel came to him and promised, “Your wife will bear a daughter and you will call her Mary. She will be filled with the Holy Spirit from her mother’s womb.” An angel also appeared to Anne at the same time and related the same happy news to her. So, Saint Anne is the mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who became the mother of Jesus and of the whole church. Saint Anne and Saint Joachim lived their lives with great trust in God. After the death of Saint Joachim, Saint Anne was a source of love and strength for her daughter Mary, and her beloved grandson Jesus. Their trust in God gave them the strength and perseverance necessary to be model parents and grandparents. Their lives are an example for all of us. Lord God, who bestowed such grace on Anne and Joachim that their daughter Mary grew up obedient to your word and made ready to be the mother of your Son: help us to commit ourselves in all things to your keeping and grant us the salvation you promised to your people; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord. Please remember in your prayers: Jeff Chambers, Katie, Mark Price, Debbie, Michael Carthy, Rev Jane Everett, Paul Sumner, Sandra Pratt, Tom, Michael, John McLellan, June Larkin, Rob Williams and David Richardson. Please also remember the families and friends of Gordon Patterson whose funeral is due to take place.

The feedback has been hugely positive. RNLI: This coming Sunday at 2 pm we will be hosting another service for our community as we join with them in celebrating the special anniversary of the RNLI. It is an opportunity for those who have served and who are still serving in this voluntary organization to come together to give thanks to God for all that has been achieved over the last 200 years. We will honour the past, celebrate current volunteers and inspire future lifesavers. Merciful Father, all things in heaven and earth are held within Your loving care; look with favour upon the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. Protect and bless the crews of all our lifeboats, our lifeguards and all who risk their own safety to bring help to others. Guide all who work for the Institution as volunteers, supporters or staff, that they may be faithful to the vision of its founders, so that it may always be seen as a beacon of hope and light to those who find themselves in peril on the seas. Through the same Jesus Christ, to whom with You and the Holy Spirit be honour and glory, now and forever. Amen.
