RNLI Service: We come together this afternoon to give thanks to God for those who have served and who are still serving in this voluntary organization and to acknowledge all that has been achieved over the last 200 years. Please do attend this community service if you are able. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be served in the Broadway Rooms afterwards.
Anne and Joachim: On Friday 26th July at morning prayer, we remembered and gave thanks to God for Anne and Joachim. They do not appear in the Bible, but appear for the first time in a document written around 150 AD known at the Gospel of James, one of Jesus’ first disciples. Tradition has it that Anne and Joachim were married for 20 years, but didn’t have any children. They prayed to God for a child and promised that if God granted their wish, they would dedicate this child to God.
According to age old traditions, while Joachim was living with shepherds, an angel came to him and promised, “Your wife will bear a daughter and you will call her Mary. She will be filled with the Holy Spirit from her mother’s womb.” An angel also appeared to Anne at the same time and related the same happy news to her. So, Saint Anne is the mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who became the mother of Jesus and of the whole church. Saint Anne and Saint Joachim lived their lives with great trust in God. After the death of Saint Joachim, Saint Anne was a source of love and strength for her daughter Mary, and her beloved grandson Jesus. Their trust in God gave them the strength and perseverance necessary to be model parents and grandparents. Their lives are an example for all of us.
Lord God, who bestowed such grace on Anne and Joachim that their daughter Mary
grew up obedient to your word and made ready to be the mother of your Son:
help us to commit ourselves in all things to your keeping
and grant us the salvation you promised to your people;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord.
Please remember in your prayers: Jeff Chambers, Katie, Mark Price, Debbie, Michael Carthy, Rev Jane Everett, Paul Sumner, Sandra Pratt, Tom, Michael, John McLellan, June Larkin, Rob Williams and David Richardson. Please also remember the families and friends of Gordon Patterson whose funeral is due to take place.
