GARDEN OF REMEMBRANCE
Garden of Remembrance...... a Guide for Families and Friends
Introduction.
Churchyards should be places of tranquillity and dignity, open to anyone who wants to come and appreciate its peace that such setting can bring. Ours is also a place of beauty set in the church grounds and every effort is made to ensure the surroundings are kept neat and tidy throughout the year. The Parochial Church Council is responsible for the upkeep of the grounds, with the works carried out by volunteers. St. Oswald’s PCC followed the guidelines set by the Diocese of Blackburn when permission was granted for a Garden of Remembrance in the church grounds.
The Regulations.
In a Garden of Remembrance, the grave remains the property of the church acting on behalf of the Diocese.
Grave positions and identifications are recorded and may be checked with the master plan held by the church.
Grave plaques are to be of York sandstone measuring 12x12 inches (30x30cm).
Inscriptions should be simple, relevant and consistent with Christian belief, as the purpose is to identify the resting place of the deceased and to honour their life.
Vase holders are permitted but again York sandstone is stipulated, and a standard size required. Only natural flowers are permitted and should be placed in the vase holder.
Wreaths are permitted in the Christmas season.
We are sure you will understand the purpose of the regulations is to preserve the rights of the majority who follow the guidelines and so help keep the Garden of Remembrance a place we can all respect.
The Vicar is authorised to ask for the removal of items that do not comply with the published guidelines.
