St Martin’s has 6 bells which were repaired, re-tuned, re-hung and refurbished in 2005. The heaviest weighs 17cwt (869kg) more than an old Mini!
Church bells are the loudest, heaviest and most valuable musical instrument that anyone is ever likely to play.
We practice every Wednesday from 7:30pm – 9pm – usually followed by a theory session at the nearby Wyndham Arms. We ring for half an hour before every Sunday service.
Ringers of all abilities are welcome to join us on any Wednesday or Sunday. And new recruits with no prior experience are especially welcome on Wednesdays. Anyone aged 9 to 90 can learn to ring. It does not take great strength or the need to have any musical knowledge. All you need is the ability to climb the 50 steps up to the Ringing Chamber and to be able to count to 6.
So if you are looking for gentle exercise, want to meet new friendly people, and provide a service to the church and community which goes back centuries, why not come along and give it a go.
