St Matthew's Church, Widcombe Hill, BA2 6AA

St Matthew's is a large church, built for the Victorians. Its beautiful spire dominates the village and houses the bells that were once situated at St Thomas, but were taken apparently following a bitter battle in the porch of St Thomas between the churchwardens!

During the 1970's it was refurbished to provide the Parish Hall and various smaller meeting rooms. Towards the end of the last century, weekly attendance fell to the point where it was no longer feasible to continue regular worship here. However, five years ago a new Sunday evening 'Emerging Generation' service was started by Holy Trinity Combe Down and it has been a real success story, so much so that their curate wo started the initiative is now the full time stipendiary priest for Widcombe.

St Matthew's it is also used by other groups and is an excellent building for use by other communities such as local schools for their festival services.

It is the largest church in Bath (with the exception of the Abbey) and consequently is a very useful venue for holding events. The church, hall and meeting rooms are available for hire, either for regular events such as aerobics classes, or for one-off large events, parties and exhibitions.
