Wookey Church is dedicated to St Matthew, one of Jesus’ disciples. He collected taxes for the Romans so, he wasn’t popular with everyone, but went on to write the first of the gospels. Join us as we celebrate St Matthew’s Day.
This year is a treat for history fans, especially those with an interest in Wookey. See fascinating excerpts from a book started in 1789 which details how the Church played a part in caring for the poor, including apprentices from this period.
There'll also be tours of the tower to enjoy an amazing view of Wookey, and tea and yummy cakes to enjoy too! Plus see some of the special treasures inside the church. Plus a treasure hunt for children to enjoy!
This is a great opportunity for adults and children to discover more about this fascinating building in our villages and the role it’s played in the history of Wookey. Plus find out more about the life and legend of St Matthew. There’s no charge for anything, but donations are very welcome.
