Somerset Wildlife Trust and the Diocese of Bath & Wells are encouraging communities to get to know the wildlife in their local churchyard and increase the value of these special places for wildlife. This project is called Wilder Churches.
On Sunday 21st April 2024 we launched Wilder Churches at Wookey Church, with the help of a team of volunteers.
As you explore the churchyard you will see that:
- Plants have been left to grow, to provide pollen and nectar for bees and butterflies and to discover what wildflowers and plants are gorwing here
- New wildflower plugs have been planted
- Older graves are providing wonderful wildlife habitats through moss, lichens and ivy covering them
- Boxes for birds, bees and bugs have been created
- Our compost area is used for all of our green waste
