Saturday 9 September 2023
The Shropshire Historic Churches Trust ‘Ride+Stride’ takes place on Saturday 9th September 2023. It’s an Open Church day when most of our churches will be open, often with light refreshments, ready for visitors from elsewhere in our Benefice and from further afield.
The aim is that some of the visitors will be sponsored to travel to churches near and far – some by walking, some on bikes, some by car (especially if raining or in need of a knee operation or just generally getting older and want to spend more time visiting and less time traveling).
Those taking part from our 9 churches will be seeking sponsors during the next few weeks, so please do support them.

Consider if YOU could be sponsored to walk, drive or ride to some churches – maybe in the Town Centre, maybe in a distant part of Shropshire you’ve never seen before…

Half the money collected is for the participant's church, and the other half goes to the Trust which supports Shropshire churches with grants for essential work and useful improvements.

Myndtown: St John the Baptist

Welcome to St John the Baptist and it's beautiful rural setting. We are part of the OnnyCamlad Benefice, a group of 9 churches within the Diocese of Hereford.

This Church of England Church dates from the 12th Century or earlier. It is considered to be unique as a country church (not only within Shropshire, but within the whole country) as it was not "spoilt" by Victorian restoration and retains its thoroughly rural, simple (almost primitive) look and feel. Once a substantial medieval village, the hamlet of Myndtown now has only the former rectory and a farmhouse with its barns.

It is in the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, at the end of a dead-end lane at the foot of the dramatic Long Mynd (much of which is National Trust Land). This makes it a place of silence, broken only by birdsong, the lowing of cattle and bleating of sheep. Even non-religious people feel it is a place of sanctuary from the modern world. Our church is open everyday for you to come and have some quiet time and we welcome visitors to all of our services.

The parish of Myndtown is committed to the safeguarding of children, young people and adults. We follow the House of Bishops guidance and policies and have our safeguarding officer, Mrs Sue Cooke. The Diocese of Hereford’s safeguarding pages contain vital links and information including contacts for the Diocesan Safeguarding Advisor (DSA) who advise our PSOs. If you are concerned that a child or adult has been harmed or may be at risk of harm please contact the DSA. If you have immediate concerns about the safety of someone, please contact the police and your local authority Children or Adults Services.
