About Us
The Benefice of Fylingdales with Hawsker cum Stainsacre is two parishes who traditionally have shared an incumbent. Since September 2023 we have joined with the Benefice of Lower Esk as a Revitalise Ministry Unit.
Led by the Priest in Charge, the Revd Jo Parker and curate the Revd Dr Sam Mawer, the unit is currently served by two retired priests and two readers.
The churches of St Stephen's Fylingdales and All Saints' Hawsker cum Stainsacre worship as a single congregation with services at All Saints' one Sunday and one Wednesday a month.
The churchmanship is mainly middle of the road, but with an outward look to new styles of worship. The congregations are open to trying new ideas and enjoy a variety of services, particularly those of the Celtic and Taizé traditions and café church.
A worship group devises and leads various types of services at least once a month. PowerPoint is sometimes used. (Services were broadcast live during Covid and can be seen on facebook.com/ststephensfylingdales/.) This lay involvement in services is a strength of both churches and has enabled them to continue through lengthy interregna and sick leave. We are working with Fylingdales School to have special services in church. The Parochial Church Councils meet bi-monthly, meeting first as individual churches and then coming together as a joint PCC. St Stephen’s supports two charities, Christian Aid and the Foodbank4Whitby & District (https://www.foodbank4whitby.org.uk/, for which it is a collecting point.
