Martlesham with Brightwell Benefice

In the charming English countryside lies the Martlesham with Brightwell Benefice, a union of parishes that embodies the quintessential spirit of rural life. Nestled in Suffolk, this benefice comprises the villages of Martlesham and Brightwell, each with its unique history and character. The benefice is also community hub that has evolved over many years.

Historical Background.

Martlesham's history can be traced back to the Domesday Book of 1086, where it was recorded as 'Martlesham,' meaning 'Martel's homestead.' The village has since grown from its medieval roots into a thriving community while retaining its historical charm. Significant landmarks, such as the Martlesham Heath Control Tower Museum, offer glimpses into its past, especially its role during World War II.

Brightwell, on the other hand, is a smaller yet equally captivating village. The name 'Brightwell' means 'bright spring,' reflecting the natural beauty and tranquillity of the area. The history of Brightwell is intricately linked with its church, St. John the Baptist, which dates back to the 14th century. This ancient building stands as a testament to the village's enduring faith and community spirit.
