Bible study has long been one of the commonest Lenten disciplines, and for good reason. Jesus' own ministry flowed from his deep immersion in scripture. We see it in his responses when tempted in the wilderness, in his statements about himself, and particularly in the way he interprets and responds to the events of the final weeks and days of his life. Indeed, much of the conflict between him and the scholars of his day is over the deep meaning of the word of his Father God.
Jean Melrose, one of our Lay Readers, has put together a series of study sheets for those wanting to go deeper in their understanding of Mark's gospel through study during Lent. In them she distills the wisdom of some of the best New Testament scholars as they seek to understand Mark's unique, simple, and direct approach to a style of literature that began with his work - the gospel.
You can download the first four sheets here. The final sheet will be released in Holy Week itself.
