The Benefice of Stoke St Michael with Leigh on Mendip and Downhead

The Churches of St Michael and All Angels in Stoke St Michael, St Giles in Leigh on Mendip and All Saints in Downhead make up this Benefice.

We are three small rural churches deep within the Mendip Hills, and a stones throw from the towns of Frome, Midsomer Norton, Wells and Shepton Mallet. We are connected to neighbouring churches of the Postlebury Group. Services take place amongst the churches on a rota basis.

We are currently in Vacancy, since our Parish Priest, Revd Anthony Dickson, retired in May 2024. We are pleased to welcome a variety of vicars from neighbouring parishes and retired clergy to help us in services during the Vacancy. Plans are underway to recruit a new Vicar, but we are unlikely to recruit until early 2025.

In the absence of a Vicar please contact the Churchwardens with any queries, or Claire our Parish Administrator- on 07404 824355 (although please note that she works part time hours and her phone isn't checked for messages between her working hours)

Safeguarding

Our Benefice is committed to safeguarding children, young people and adults from harm. We follow the House of Bishops guidance and policies and have our own Parish Safeguarding Officer (PSO). Our Diocese’s safeguarding pages contain vital links and information including contacts for the Diocesan Safeguarding Advisor who advises our PSO. If you are concerned that a child or adult has been harmed or may be at risk of harm please contact the PSO - Justine North, tel 01749 840412, [email protected], or the Diocesan Safeguarding Advisor
If you have immediate concerns about the safety of someone, please contact the police and your local authority’s children or adult social care services
