All Hallows, Bardsey

The Church of All Hallows has served the people of the village of Bardsey, and the surrounding area, for well over a thousand years. A Grade 1 listed building of Anglo-Saxon heritage it is steeped in history and prayer.

All Hallows has seen many changes since its origins in the 9th century but its principle function is, as it always has been, to offer glory to God and a place for the people of Bardsey and visiting pilgrims to gather for worship and prayer and to appreciate its purpose and peace. The people of Bardsey are rightly proud of this building and of its tradition and we invite visiting pilgrims to sit and ponder the time, talents and wealth devoted to it as a place of Christian worship and spiritual devotion over the centuries. To help visitors understand the history of the building there are leaflets just inside the door and all are welcome to read and to keep.

We are a member of the Inclusive Church Network and welcome everyone, without exception.

There is much to view in this special place for as well as its historic artifacts the church also holds the Bardsey Millennium Tapestry. Stitched by Bardsey people, it is an artwork of four panels displaying in great detail village life through the four seasons of the year. Visitors are also welcome to make use of the church library at the south east corner of the church, which holds many contemporary spiritual books for inspirational reading and smaller booklets which can be taken away. Prayer leaflets are also available near the entrance to the church which once again may be read and taken away.
Pilgrims with younger children are invited to use the children’s craft area at the rear of the church. All Hallows also has a visitors’ book which shows how many visitors come through our doors during the year, and their comments – please do sign as you leave.

The church is blessed with a very large churchyard with benches where visitors are welcome to rest, to admire the view and to appreciate our God given countryside. Much of the churchyard is managed in a neat a tidy manner to respect those who are buried there but on the southern boundary you will find a wild life area and stream, called the Glade, where you are invited to take the ‘wild life walks’. The church is committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2030 and has been granted a Silver Eco award under the A Rocha Eco Church UK Project – it is hoped that visitors will see evidence of their work promoting environmental sustainability as they walk around the church and gardens.

The church is open from 10 am to 4 pm every day. Services are held most Sunday mornings. For more information on service times see the website

Safeguarding

Both All Hallows and St Mary Magdalene churches, in the Parish of Bardsey with East Keswick, are committed to the safeguarding of children, young people and adults. We follow the House of Bishops guidance and policies and have our own Parish Safeguarding Officer (PSO). The Diocese of Leeds’s safeguarding pages contain vital links and information including contacts for the Diocesan Safeguarding Advisor (DSA) who advise our PSOs. If you are concerned that a child or adult has been harmed or may be at risk of harm please contact the DSA. If you have immediate concerns about the safety of someone, please contact the police and your local authority Children or Adults Services.
